Happy Birthday!
Celebrating birthdays-Chinese style!
7/20/13
When our teachers discovered that some of the American students would be celebrating their birthday during our stay in Jiaxing, they went into full party-planning mode. The result was a mixture of delectable cakes, Chinese birthday songs and a lot of fun!
Daniel celebrated his sweet 16.
Genny celebrated her 17th and Madeline celebrated the big 1-8!
Birthday cakes in China are beautiful works of art!
In no way are they as sweet as American cakes, and they come piled with all sorts of fruit! Dragon fruit, peaches, melon, and even baby tomatoes! The frosting is light and fluffy-basically a very thick layer of whipped cream! Decorative chocolate sticks and shapes are all over the cake!
Hey mom, what do you think about importing graduation party cake next year? Hehe...
Even in China it is customary for a wish to be made! Young children are also given two eggs and noodles to eat, so that they will have a long, healthy and lucky life!
But my favorite new little tradition, is the placing of cake frosting on the birthday boy/ girl's nose. Watch out family, I'm bringing this tradition home!
The seventh grade held birthday parties for members of their classes who had July birthdays and we were invited! We taught them some silly classroom games like Heads Up Seven Up and Silent Seatball.
Age is interesting in China. When a Child is born, he is considered 1 year old. At the end of the calender year, he is considered two years old. So when people tell us their ages we often ask whether that is in Chinese years or American years!
All fun and games With tasty, tasty cake!
